Johnny Van Zant (pictured below with Gretchen Wilson) was born on this day back in 1959 in Jacksonville, Florida. As the younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd co-founder and former lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and .38 Special founder Donnie Van Zant, Johnny's been part of Southern Rock royalty his entire life.
Ten years after the tragic death of brother Ronnie, Johnny took the reigns as the lead singer of Skynyrd and remains in that role today. Many younger country fans know Johnny as part of Van Zant, a country music duo Johnny formed in 1985 with brother Donnie. Van Zant had their big country breakthrough with their top ten hit Help Somebody back in 2005. Join me in wishing Johnny a Happy Birthday!
Here's a little country music news that you probably won't see on the front page of your favorite magazines. On this day back in 2007, Little Big Town's Jimi Westbrook learned the hard way why our mom's told us not to jump on the furniture. He broke his little toe while jumping around on his couch at his home in Nashville. This fact as well as other random facts about country music can be found on RolandNote.com.

Ah, fans... You've gotta love 'em. Looks like Mr. Yankees hat is getting quite an eyeful. But, at least the lady behind him is giving Lee Ann a thumbs up!
The lovable and very talented Mary Chapin Carpenter was born on this day back in 1958. She burst onto the country music scene in 1991 when Down At The Twist And Shout made it all the way to number two on the Billboard Hot Country charts. While I love so many of her songs and videos, the video below is by far my favorite Mary Chapin Carpenter moment. It's from the 1990 CMA awards, and Mary was somewhat of an unknown outside of the Nashville music scene. She wasn't an unknown afterwards though... Enjoy!
I've gotta give Taylor credit. Most celebrities as famous as Taylor don't stop and smile and sign autographs at the airport. They usually exit the plane looking like an undercover sunglasses model who's afraid that exposing any part of their skin to the world will be fatal. Not Taylor. She just politely stops, smiles and starts signing. She truly does seem to be an honest and genuine person who appreciates all the success she's enjoying.
Patty was on hand February 3rd with the others to announce their participation in a race to raise awareness for COPD held at the ESPN ZONE at Times Square.
Carrie chose to sing live rather than lip synch, which is what most singers do here, and for that, she deserves huge props. Her sound check performance was better, but that's to be expected, considering the magnitude of the event. All in all, I think she did a pretty good job. What did you think?
Watch Carrie sing and see many more photos after the jump.
Richie McDonald was born on this day back in 1962 in Lubbock, Texas. He's best known as the former lead singer of Lonestar, who had a string of hits during the 90's and early 2000's. Perhaps their biggest hit while Richie was the lead singer was their number one country and pop hit Amazed from 1999. Happy Birthday Richie!
